Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre

Fly back in time with Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre.

Just over 11 miles from Trevear Farm, Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre is a superb family and dog-friendly attraction. Located near RAF St Mawgan and Newquay Airport, you can explore its Hardened Aircraft Shelter, sit inside a Hawker Harrier jet, take a Vickers Varsity tour and explore the open grounds, watching the aircraft arrivals and departures of today before refuelling in the café.

Sounding good so far? Whether you know a little or a lot about planes, everyone can take something valuable from a day at Cornwall Aviation Centre. Well-known for the calibre of its exhibits and the passion of its dedicated team, a day here affords a unique opportunity to learn all about Britain’s aviation heritage and get hands-on with some of the real planes on show.

Set amongst a formidable complex of ex-RAF Hardened Aircraft Shelter buildings, the base at CAHC was originally purposed for the Buccaneer Maritime Strike Force. Later used by various aircraft such as Typhoons, Jaguars and F16s, the centre is an intriguing time-trap pulling you through the ages right up until 2008, when Harriers and Tornados were the last to use the site.

Fascinating as it is to walk amongst the aircraft, the CAHC invites you to enjoy a fully immersive experience. Climb aboard the aircraft, enjoying a guided tour of the larger aircraft and plonking yourself in the pilot’s seat of the fighters, imaging what it must feel like to pierce the skies at the speed of sound, 10 miles high!

To make your visit all the richer, your tour will be accompanied by knowledgeable guides and staff who are always on hand to answer questions and share anecdotes. With many of the volunteers and staff having worked on or flown in the same aircraft you can see at the base, they are veritable founts of knowledge and always willing to regale visitors with jaw-dropping, side-splitting tales.

Once you’ve explored all you can explore, make your way over to the centre’s outside seating area for a picnic or its 1950s American-style café where sweet treats and savoury snacks are a-plenty. Indulge your taste buds, peruse the gift shop filled with memorabilia and when you’re ready, head back to your luxury cottage in Padstow to wind down and kickback!
