Christmas and New Year Swims in Cornwall 2019/20

Christmas and New Year Swims in Cornwall 2019/20

Get ready to make a splash with our list of toe-tingling swims in Cornwall this year

If you live by the sea or like to visit the Cornish coast, you may have heard of a rather unusual tradition that takes place each year. If you haven’t, I can tell you that it involves hundreds of men, women and even children running with equal measures of trepidation and excitement into the sea. Semi-naked. In December. Of their own accord.

These organised swims may seem surprising but in fact they take place across Cornwall at the end of every year. Typically Christmas Day swims, they are also held on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and are a major attraction for both locals and visitors alike ready to put their extremities to the test and earn that extra mince pie and steaming mulled wine.

With swims often sponsored, the events are a great way to bring communities together and raise money for selected charities. New participants are always encouraged to get involved and take a splash, but even if you can’t be tempted to get in, supporters are welcome on the shoreline to provide encouragement, as well as towels and hot drinks.

If you’d like to take part or watch a Christmas Day or New Year swim this year (weather permitting) before heading home to your luxury cottage, here is our top selection for you.

P.S. No wetsuits allowed!
