Christmas in Padstow

Christmas in Padstow

Every season in Padstow delivers a unique twist on the ordinary. However, it is at Christmas that Padstow’s magic is arguably at its most powerful.

Christmas has always been one of my favourite times of year. This may be largely to do with the fact it is one of the few occasions where it is acceptable, nay, entirely encouraged, to drink Bucks Fizz before breakfast. It is also to do with the fact that acts of good will and kindness are encouraged more than ever and families gather round to spend quality, uninterrupted time together.

In Padstow, it is this feeling that transcends and pours into the streets. Not the Bucks Fizz, but the infectious cheer that draws you in with a magnetic quality. Spending a Christmas here is undeniably special; from the quaint fishermen’s cottages that radiate cosiness, to the little boutiques and award-winning restaurants throwing light and warmth out onto the street, to the boats bobbing merrily along to Christmas tunes hanging on the breeze.

For all those who cannot wait to begin, celebrations commence in Padstow with the town’s Christmas Lights Switch On on 3rd December. Swiftly following this is Padstow’s Christmas Festival between 7th and 10th of the month. During the festival, food and festivities combine to create the perfect winter wonderland. Set around the harbour, the festival is packed with food, drink and craft stalls and two cookery demonstration theatres are constructed for presentations. Led by Padstow legends Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth and Nathan Outlaw, almost 60 chefs from around the country gather to enjoy the festivities and offer free demonstrations and cooking tips.

Continuing throughout the month, Padstow maintains its Christmassy feel with lots of events. Nearby Wadebridge, Newquay and Bodmin all have Christmas markets too that you can visit before returning home to your snuggly accommodation. If you have children, Retallack Resort & Spa welcome you to enjoy their Enchanted Den. For nearly a week between 18th and 23rd December, guests are invited to pay a visit to this wonderful world where children can create Christmas gifts and decorations, ride the resort’s ponies and even, if they are really good this year, get a chance to meet Santa and his friends.

With the line-up of events and activities, a Christmas break in this part of the county can be lots of fun. Strip it all back though and there is something even more special about spending Christmas in Padstow. Even the most resolute of home-birds would be tempted by waking up to the sound of the sea on Christmas morning, the water’s chorus lulling you into consciousness. Lending itself entirely to this magical season, a Christmas in Padstow allows you to move at your own pace. You can soak in as much or as little as you choose, letting the atmosphere wrap itself around you.

If you haven’t spent a Christmas in Padstow before, consider asking Santa this year. With Christmas day itself the glittery star on top of the tree, try something a little different and let Padstow’s charm win you over. And remember, don’t forget the Bucks Fizz.
